What is Wool Felt?

Wool felt is a non-woven textile made by pressing and matting wool fibers together under heat, moisture, and pressure β€” rather than weaving or knitting them. The process locks the fibers into a dense, uniform sheet with no loose threads, no fraying edges, and no woven structure to unravel.

That structural difference is what makes felt useful well beyond textiles. Because the fibers are bonded rather than woven, felt can be cut, die-cut, or shaped without the material coming apart at the edges β€” which is why it shows up in gaskets, washers, and precision-cut components as often as it shows up in cushions and dΓ©cor.

How it's made

The process starts with raw wool, which is cleaned to remove impurities and then carded β€” a mechanical process that aligns the fibers before felting. During felting, the aligned fibers are bonded together under controlled heat and pressure, forming a sheet. That sheet is then pressed to reach the target thickness and density, cut to size, and inspected before packing.

Why density matters

Not all wool felt is the same. Soft felt is used where flexibility and cushioning matter β€” padding, lining, and dΓ©cor applications. Medium hard felt strikes a balance and is common in gaskets and washers. Hard felt holds its shape under load, making it suitable for structural padding and heavy-duty industrial components. Manufacturers who understand which density an application needs β€” rather than defaulting to one option β€” get better performance out of the part.

Where it's used

Wool felt's combination of density, sound absorption, and cut-ability makes it useful across a wide range of industries: automotive interiors, furniture cushioning, acoustic panelling, packaging inserts, and industrial sealing components, among others. Its natural fiber structure also gives it sound-dampening properties that synthetic alternatives often struggle to match.
